I recently contributed an article to the South Shore Mama’s Blog that shares ideas for organization and storing children’s toys. As a mother and former kindergarten teacher I know first hand how overwhelming it can be to figure out where to put everything. I share my advice in this article.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“As a former kindergarten teacher, my classroom had an abundance of toys in September. However, I found the children were overwhelmed if all the toys and games were in the room. They would get too excited, open a game, then another, toss it aside etc. They wouldn’t appreciate what was there for them to use. Instead, I’d learned to put out just a few games and toys each month. The next month I would rotate things, I would put some of the initial toys away and bring some more out from the back room. They actually took much better care of them! This idea works well at home too. If you are uncertain as to how this can be effective, observe a child opening all the many Christmas gifts at once. Does he really stop and enjoy the present he just opened, or does he toss it aside gearing up to tear into the next present?—– My point exactly!”

It’s always a good idea to select your Oriental or Contemporary rug first. Then build your color scheme based on colors in the rug. I like to use the dominant rug color for my sofa. The second dominant color in the rug can be used for walls. The strong colors you see in the rug work well as accents in a room, and usually in small doses, such as for pillows. However, a strong color can also look terrific used for 1 feature wall and paint the other 3 walls a shade of neutral.

Paint colors can be custom mixed making it very easy to achieve the color scheme you prefer.

At some point or other, when shopping for furniture, you realize that just because you watch HGTV doesn’t make your own buying decisions any easier! Its hard to relate the rooms on tv to your home with its unique set of challenges, whether it’s an odd size room or whether you are trying to blend existing furniture with new. When spending thousands of dollars on furniture to live with for a long time, there is a fear factor, “What if I make a mistake?”, “What if the furniture looks wrong in my home?

Have you ever purchased a sofa which looked great in a store, had it delivered and now you are horrified. It looks so much bigger in your home, it overwhelms the room–and now what do you do?! What happened?? Here’s what happened: You weren’t aware of size, scale and proportion relative to your room. Interior designers are aware of those factors and knowledgeable about color schemes, fabric weave, furniture styles and construction etc.. They guide their clients toward the best decisions that suits their family. What happened to the sofa you purchased? Usually, “mistakes” are relegated to the basement or you live with it, hating it every time you walk into the room!

No one wants to made a costly mistake. So, what should you do? Ever consider hiring an interior designer? The response might be, “No, I can’t afford that!” Really?? “Maybe, you can’t afford not to”. If you shop and are unaware of furniture styles and construction, fabric combinations, etc., you’re taking a chance you’ll get it right. If there is an error in judgement, it will cost you thousands of dollars. Usually stores have a “No Return” policy on custom ordered furniture, when the mistake is not theirs. Spending alittle extra for a designer’s time and talent, is like purchasing insurance. It gives peace of mind because, with their training and experience, the completed room will be beautifully furnished and meet your budget and family’s lifestyle.

I have many design services on my website including Virtual Services at different price points. Check them out and see what works for you. Good interior design is affordable. So read on and you’ll see how!

1. First- and very important–get rid of excess clutter. This includes photos, accessories, excess artificial plants, books, and magazines, kid’s toys and fussy window treatments

2. The look should be spare. The focus is on square footage—not possessions.

3.Clean, clean, clean a must for all rooms in the home. Emphasis is on kitchen and bathrooms.

4. Replace old comforters, toss pillows and, worn out bathroom rugs.

5. Slipcover old sofas and loveseats for a fresh new look.

6. Pet food, water bowls etc., put out of the way place, before prospective buyers walk thru the kitchen.

7. Pet smells—does the house smell fresh or like a wet dog?? Hmmm, time to clean.

8. Children’s bedrooms-remove the 30 posters stapled to the walls, the clutter, dirty socks and underwear on the floor-you get the picture.

9. Reorganize the children’s bedrooms, their clothes must be off the floor, as well as toys, books, and their stuff. De-cluttering again needed in these rooms.

10. A little cash makes a big splash in a home.

Keep in mind, the better the home looks, the more likely you are to get a faster sale—and beat out your competition.

IF this is too overwhelming—

“When you want to Redesign, Call Classic Design”, and help will be on the way.
